Dental Emergencies We Treat

Not every dental problem is an emergency, but some situations get worse quickly without care. Call our office right away if you notice any of the following:

  • Severe toothache: Throbbing or lingering pain that may point to an infected nerve.
  • Knocked-out tooth: An adult tooth that has come out completely, where minutes matter.
  • Cracked or broken tooth: A fracture that exposes the inner tooth or causes sharp pain when you bite.
  • Swelling or abscess: A bump on the gums, facial swelling, or fever that can signal a spreading infection.
  • Lost crown or filling: A missing restoration that leaves the tooth sensitive and vulnerable.
  • Implant or denture problems: A loose implant crown or a broken denture that keeps you from eating.

If you are unsure whether your situation qualifies, call us and describe what is happening. Our team can help you decide how soon you need to be seen.

What to Do Before You Arrive

A few quick steps at home can protect your tooth and ease discomfort while you head to our office. Stay as calm as you can and call us on the way.

For a Knocked-Out Tooth

Pick the tooth up by the crown, never the root, and rinse it gently with water if it is dirty. The American Association of Endodontists advises patients to see a dentist within 30 minutes of a knocked-out tooth, and to try placing it back in the socket or keep it moist in milk.

For a Broken Tooth or Lost Crown

Rinse your mouth with warm water and save any pieces you find. Avoid chewing on that side, and cover sharp edges with sugar-free gum or dental wax until we can repair the tooth.

For Pain or Swelling

Over-the-counter pain relievers and a cold compress on the outside of your cheek may help temporarily. If swelling spreads toward your eye or neck, or you have trouble breathing or swallowing, go to the nearest emergency room.

How We Handle Your Emergency Visit

When you arrive, our first goal is to find the source of the problem and get you comfortable. Digital x-rays and our 3D CBCT scanner help Dr. Kortbus see cracks, infections, and bone issues that a quick look might miss.

Many emergencies can be treated in the same visit. Our in-house CAD/CAM milling system allows us to make many crowns in a single appointment, so a broken tooth may be fully repaired before you leave. When a tooth cannot be saved, Dr. Kortbus can discuss dental implants for Port Orange patients and other replacement options.

Treatment Options After an Emergency

Stopping the pain is the first step, but we also want the repair to last. Depending on what we find, your care may include a filling, a same-day crown, a gum treatment, or a gentle extraction through our oral surgery services.

Dr. Kortbus explains each option, including cost and recovery, before treatment begins. If more work is needed later, we schedule it at a time that works for you, so you never feel rushed into a decision while you are in pain.

Preventing the Next Emergency

Many dental emergencies start as small problems that went unnoticed. A tiny crack, an old filling, or early gum infection can turn into a painful situation months later. Regular exams give us the chance to spot these warning signs early.

If you play contact sports or grind your teeth at night, a custom mouthguard or night guard can protect your teeth from injury and wear. Ask about these options at your next visit, especially for kids and teens who play football, baseball, or basketball.

Paying for Emergency Care

We never want cost to keep you from getting urgent help. We accept many insurance plans, including Delta Dental PPO, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna Dental, Guardian, MetLife, and Humana.

For patients without coverage, we offer CareCredit and Cherry financing along with our $299 per year in-house membership plan, which includes exams, x-rays, cleanings, and 20% off additional treatment.

Emergency Dental Questions From Port Orange Patients

Here are fast answers to the questions Port Orange patients ask during a dental emergency.

Can I be seen the same day?

We do our best to see dental emergencies the same day. Call our office as early as you can and describe your symptoms so we can find the soonest opening.

Do you treat emergencies for new patients?

Yes. You do not need to be an existing patient. New patients from Port Orange and across Volusia County can call us for urgent care.

Should I go to the ER or a dentist for tooth pain?

For most toothaches, broken teeth, and lost crowns, a dentist is the right choice because we can treat the cause. Go to the ER if you have swelling that affects breathing or swallowing, a high fever, or a serious facial injury.

How long do I have to save a knocked-out tooth?

The sooner, the better. Try to reach a dentist within 30 minutes, keep the tooth moist in milk or back in the socket, and handle it only by the crown.

Can you fix a broken tooth in one visit?

Often, yes. Our in-office milling system lets us design and place many crowns during a single appointment, depending on how the tooth broke.
